As I sit here on the balcony of our hotel in Barahona, I listen to the distinct sound of grasshoppers and simply count my blessings. What better way to kick off a fantastic 26 day trip to the Dominican Republic, than to officially begin our BRP Blog. Hello to all those who may not know me, I am Katie, the founder and executive director of BRP. I would like to take a brief moment to not only thank all those who have supported my insanely crazy journey over the past 4 years, but those who have believed in BRP and the beautiful organization it has become. BRP is an entirely volunteer run organization, and with that we have an INCREDIBLE team of passionate volunteers who truly care about the work we do. As I look back to almost 9 years ago when my journey first began, I cannot believe how far we have come, and that my dream is slowly becoming a reality. Helping others and expecting nothing in return, but love and thanks, is some kind of feeling that I cannot even describe. When people ask me to describe what we do and how we do it, I simply say it is something you have to experience.
In 2013, when I founded BRP, I decided to take a trip down to Barahona by myself and have some "meditation time". Since then I have been so incredibly busy running the organization and working full-time that my "meditation time" was well overdue! This week I am in Barahona to not only spend time with my staff, my workers, and most important my families, but to spend time on my own focusing on the future goals of BRP. As you can probably imagine with a team of 40-50 staff and volunteers, I never have time to sit down and have a conversation, so I am devoting my entire first week to the tranquility of conversation, love, hope, and the strategic planning of 2017. This year has been incredible thus far, and we aren't done just yet! With my travels to NYC and my invitation to become apart of the Nexus Family this summer, I not only learned so much about myself, but I met incredible people that only pushed me to pursue every hope and dream I have ever envisioned for BRP. They made me realize what I had built was incredibly special and we had to the potential to make an incredible impact. Through the highs and lows of 2016, I had the confidence to put myself first, and with the support of my family and my amazing husband, to pursue my work with BRP full-time. Thank you to those special individuals, you 100% made this entirely possible.
As I close out today's blog, sitting in a rocking chair with faint bachata playing in the background, I would like to send a big thank you to the donors that raised $2,501.14 this past week to fund a beautiful new home for a family here in Barahona. Flor is a sweet woman who has been living in a home less than suitable for any family to live in. I plan to visit her tomorrow and inform her we will be building a new home for her come December 3rd when our SCAD Venture Team 10 arrives! THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS: Mary Varacallo, Taylor Crafton, John & Barbara Boling, Haley Varacallo, John & Dee Munn, Jeremy & Holly Sainlar and Luke & Jessica Marquardt.
I hope to inspire you in my blog posts over the next 26 days, and give a personal insight of my organization. We all deserve to take the time to meditate over what is important in life and give our time to those who love us and support everything we do. As a take away I hope you will find some time to sit and bask in your own meditation time to further your own success and dreams.
Buenas Noches, Katie
